In Memory of Oscar 1985-2000

"The Grieving Golden"

Oscar , a very vocal Siamese mix, lived a wonderful 15 Years. He was a house cat.
When we bought Rusty in 1995 , as a puppy,Oscar was already ten years old by that time. Oscar took well to Rusty, he just let him know up front who was boss and showed him his nice sharp claws in case Rusty had any doubts. Rusty stayed in the house a lot when he was a puppy , so he got aquainted with Oscar quiet well.
The years went by, and by the year 2000 we also had Lady, Daisy, Renee, and Darlin'. They also got to know Oscar, he went outside less and less, but he enjoyed the nice sunny window sill. He loved to watch the Golden's playing outside. They would often watch him in the window.
Oscar's health started going down hill in the early summer of 2000. He frequently went to the bathroom , causing him to dehydrate.
One Day we came home to the unexpected, Oscar couldn't move, he was so weak . We made an emergency visit to our vet.
The diagnosis was a probable diabetes, or maybe kidney failure. The vet said they would have to run all kinds of tests, and honestly, if it was either or of diabetes or Kidney failure, Oscar would be on tons of medication, and he still may not get better.
So , we had to make that painful decision. We had to put him to sleep. We couldn't let him live like that. You see, Oscar was full of life always, until those last three weeks.
We brought him home, and fixed him up a casket , and prepared to bury him. We have a special burial place for our pets.
After Oscar was in his casket, we proceeded to get the shovel to bury him.
All the Goldens were with us.They knew something was wrong, they just have that deep instinct. They kept sniffing and sniffing the casket. We opened it up so they could see that Oscar was gone.
We closed it back up and headed down to the burial place. The Golden's were restless, but especially Rusty.
We proceeded in digging the hole. When the hole was dug we placed the casket in the ground. and started filling the dirt in.
Rusty didn't like that at all, he started trying to dig the dirt back off frantically. We had to stop and talk to Rusty, and when we did he started crying. Now, I'm not talking about whining as dogs may do, I am talking about crying, sounded almost like a human, and very loud. Well , of course that just made it worse for all of us.We all had a good cry together, as our last goodbye to Oscar.
We will always remember Oscar, and we will always remember also, the deep compassion our Golden had for Oscar.
Golden's amaze us everyday, with their amazing love, Maybe in heaven the streets will be lined.......With Golden's.

Here is a little poem we received in the mail from our Veterinarians office after Oscar's death.

A Prayer for Animals
By Albert Schweitzer
Here our humble prayer, Oh God, For our friends the
animals, especially for animals who are suffering, for any
that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry;
for all that must be put to death. We entreat for them all
Thy mercy and pity, and for those who deal with them we ask
a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals and so to
share the blessings of the merciful.
